The Favre Factor: Who Did You Root For?

I don’t know about you…but I had a heck of a time in front of the television last night.  The Saints/Vikings game was a good one…but even though the first half, I didn’t know who to root for.

In the interest of full disclosure … let me first say that I’m in a football pool, and I picked the Vikings to win.  Not because I like the Vikings — in fact, it’s quite the opposite.  But I felt they were the better team and they’d come off with the win.  In that same pool, I also put the Packers in the Super Bowl — that shows you how good I am at pools.

But I’m curious to know if any of you had a hard time “picking sides” last night.  The hardest part for me was the Favre factor.  I love the man — he’s a legend when it comes to football.  I still haven’t “forgiven” him for his actions when he left the Packers…but I’ve gotten over it.  He did what he had to do to continue to play the sport.  I get it.

If Favre was playing for any other team…I probably would have been rooting for that team last night.  But rooting for the Vikings goes against everything I was raised to do in life!!

So even though part of me wanted to see Favre win and go to the Super Bowl again…and I did pick the Vikings to win last night…the evening was a difficult one.  I found myself watching the game silently…not really cheering for anyone.  What a fun night, huh?  Although I am really happy the Saints are heading to the Super Bowl.  What a deserving team…should be a fun match-up to watch.

Who did you cheer for last night, and why?

  1. I too rooted for Favre. It took me a long time to do so but I finally did. I went to the Packer/Viking Game in Green Bay. Prior to that game I was one of the biggest Favre bashers there was. Him playing for the Jets was no big deal to me. Out of sight out of mind. But then he went to the Viqueens. Really? There of all places? And it wasn’t just the fact that it was “that” team…it was also how he did it. “I’m gonna show up when training camp is over so I don’t have to do all that stuff like the rest of the NFL” I felt that was B.S. I argued with Tom about this for a long time. He felt it was ok. Why should a hall of famer like Brett have to do training camp after 20 years in the league? “He’s earned that right?” If he’s earned that, then after 20 years I don’t wanna set up my own equipment either. I just wanna show up to the event, play the music and leave. Someone else can set it up and tear it down….Right? Apples to apples! :) He didn’t agree. So after listening to 50,000 people boo the same man that helped put Green Bay back on the football map, I couldn’t help but feel a little disgusted. I wasn’t happy about the choices he made but he earned my respect. He did the same thing on Sunday night. Brusied and beaten, he did what Packer fans are used to…he tried to make a play. It turned out in a way we are all to familiar with. I literally put my hands above my head and shouted “NO!” I couldn’t believe that I was rooting for THAT team. But after thinking about it I was rooting for THAT man. Wanting his season to not be over. Wanting just one more game. Maybe it was his last? But if it was, he went down swinging like he always did. Thanks Brett! No matter where you are…I’m not ready to see you go.
